Tenant Handbooks
|
|
|
The tenant handbooks are ready to go! I will be
distributing them this week and will be available to
answer any questions you may have. Please take
some time to look over the handbook as
many things were updated or added to this
edition.
Especially important is the Emergency Procedures
Section (Section 4). We recommend that you print
extra copies of these plans for your office and discuss
them at your next staff meeting. We've also included
updated floor plans that highlight the life safety
devices and emergency exits on each floor.
We hope you find this handbook helpful and look
forward to your feedback. In the future, all updates to
the handbook will be uploaded directly to the Network222
website where you can download a .PDF copy of
the handbook and print updated sections as
necessary.

IceCube Neutrino Observatory
This month we will focus our attentions on the
IceCube project, which is housed on the fifth floor of
Network222.
So what exactly is the IceCube project? Evelyn
Malkus, Education and Outreach Specialist at IceCube
explains:
IceCube is a project to build a neutrino telescope in
the deep ice of the South Pole. By inserting 4800 light
sensors at depths from 1450 to 2450 meters below
the surface, physicists will be able to detect extremely
high energy neutrinos from supernovas, black holes,
and other cosmic sources.
Project engineers designed a special drilling system
using hot water to create the deep holes into which
the sensors are inserted. This drill was constructed at
the Physical Sciences Lab in Stoughton where the
sensors are assembled and tested as well. Signals
from the sensors, called Digital Optical Modules or
DOMs, are received and interpreted at the South Pole
before being transmitted to Madison to our Data
Warehouse at 222. The National Science Foundation
administers this $270 million dollar project which will
be completed in 2011.
The project office of IceCube is on the fifth floor where
project management, accounting, engineering, data
storage, communications, and science analysis take
place. Visitors are welcome to see the display in the
fifth floor reception area. Tenants of 222 can arrange a
lunch-time talk by IceCube staff in one of the IceCube
conference rooms or in their own facilities.
Some interesting South Pole facts:
- Between November 1 and February 15 there are
about 250 people at the South Pole. Of these, about
50 are IceCube scientists and engineers.
- The South Pole is at an elevation of about 10,000
feet!
- Water use is restricted so bathing is limited to two, 2
minute showers per week!
For more information about the project, go to the IceCube website,
or contact Evelyn Malkus, 608-263-0643.
Thanks Evelyn!

Maintenance Requests
Q: When should I submit a maintenance request
online?
A: Good question! The online maintenance request form should be
used for all non-emergency maintenance issues that
occur within your suite.
When filling out the maintenance request, please be a
specific as possible - which corner of your suite is the
problem in? Does this happen all the time or just
specific times of the day? Has this been going on for
awhile now?
Q: What doesn't require a maintenance request?
A: Another great question! The two main things that
don't require a maintenance request anymore are
janitorial issues and building/parking access
requests. For both those, you should contact the front
desk.
Q: What should I do in an maintenance emergency
then?
A: Fiore maintenance staff is on-call 24/7. Should
such an event occur, please dial our emergency
maintenance line at 608-282-6620. You
will be prompted to dial '0' and then be routed to an
answering
service, who will connect you to an on-call
maintenance staff member.
If this is a true building emergency you should follow
the emergency procedures found in the tenant
handbook, which is located online.
Q: What if I notice something in a common area?
A: We try to catch things in the common areas during
our weekly building inspections, however we can't
always catch everything! We ask that you please use
the online maintenance request form to
report such issues. We appreciate your help in
keeping the building well-maintained!
Some common maintenance requests:
Q: The toilet is overflowing!
A: Call 608-282-6620!
Q: The bathroom sink doesn't turn on!
A: Fill out an online maintenance request!
Q: I just spilled coffee on the floor!
A: Contact the front desk!
Q: My refrigerator's running!
A: Nice try. :)
